The German Media Control research group, which monitors broadcasting, found that documentaries about Hitler are aired twice a day on German television channels and that books and films about the Nazi leader are being produced in record numbers.

A Síndrome Respiratória do Oriente Médio (MERS) chega aos EUA:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced today that the first case of Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome has been confirmed in the United States, in what officials are calling "a rapidly evolving situation."

CDC officials are investigating with health officials in Indiana, where the case emerged.

On a phone call with press, the CDC said the infected person was providing healthcare in Saudi Arabia before traveling to Indiana via Riyadh, London, and Chicago. He or she went to the emergency room on April 28 with shortness of breath, coughing, and fever, and is currently on oxygen in an Indiana hospital but in stable condition.

"We do not yet know how the patient became infected or how many people had close contact with the patient," Dr. Anne Schuchat, the director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases said on the call.

The patient is currently isolated, and there are no other suspected cases. The CDC is working with local public health officials to provide guidance to the patient's close contacts, who may be at risk.

"We want to take this very seriously and not assume that it's a minor issue," said Schuchat. "But this represents a very low risk to the broader general public."

Still, Schuchat said, "We should not be surprised if additional cases are identified among healthcare workers who had close contact before patient was isolated."

The spread of MERS has, in general, been limited to people who have very close contact with infected patients, such as caretakers and healthcare workers. While CDC officials are working to contact people who were on the plane or bus with the patient, they suspect that their risk is low.

The hub of the MERS outbreak is in Saudi Arabia, where there have been hundreds of cases since the virus first emerged in 2012.

The CDC is not currently recommending that anyone change their travel plans, though people who have recently traveled to the Arabian Peninsula and their close contacts should pay attention to any symptoms. If you develop fever, cough, and shortness of breath within 14 days of a trip to that region, see a health professional and be sure to mention your recent travel.

The virus that causes MERS is related to SARS. It's less contagious but more frequently fatal. Symptoms begin as a cold and can escalate to pneumonia, organ failure, and death. There is no vaccine and no specific treatment.

"This is another reminder that diseases are just a plane ride away," Schuchat said. "MERS is now in our heartland."

No Afeganistão, nenhuma novidade, já que a produção de ópio só aumenta:

America’s war on drugs is failing in Afghanistan, with opium production at record levels, despite spending $7.5 billion to tackle the problem. Over 200 thousand hectares is used to grow opium, an increase of 36 percent, according to a US report.

The report, which was commissioned by SIGAR, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction makes grim reading, with opium poppy cultivation increasing by over a third, while the country now has about 1.3 million heroin users. This is a ten-fold increase compared to 2005, when around 130,000 people were using the drug.

Afghanistan is responsible for about three-quarters of the world’s heroin production, with much of it being cultivated in the Helmand and Kandahar provinces in the south of the country. However, the US has concentrated most of its efforts in the east of Afghanistan, which has relatively little poppy production, as it is safer than working in the south.

Attempts to limit production and seize heroin have not been helped due to a downscaling of operations by the ISAF (International Security Assistance Force). In 2013, coalition forces managed to seize 41,000 kilograms of opium out of the 5.5 million kilograms produced in Afghanistan.

Agentes do FBI e da CIA na Ucrânia para (d)estabilizar a situação:

Dozens of specialists from the US Central Intelligence Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation are advising the Ukrainian government, a German newspaper reported Sunday.

Citing unnamed German security sources, Bild am Sonntag said the CIA and FBI agents were helping Kiev end the rebellion in the east of Ukraine and set up a functioning security structure.

It said the agents were not directly involved in fighting with pro-Russian militants. "Their activity is limited to the capital Kiev," the paper said.

The FBI agents are also helping the Kiev government fight organised crime, it added.

A group specialised in financial matters is to help trace the wealth of former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, according to the report.

The interim Kiev government took charge in late February after months of street protests forced the ouster of Kremlin-friendly Yanukovych.

Fierce battles between Ukrainian soldiers and pro-Russian separatists in the country's east have left more than 50 people dead in recent days.

Last month the White House confirmed that CIA director John Brennan had visited Kiev as part of a routine trip to Europe, in a move condemned by Moscow.

The number of children in Japan has fallen to a new low, while the amount of people over 65 has reached a record high as the population ages and shrinks, the government said Sunday.

There were an estimated 16.33 million children aged under 15 as of April 1, down 160,000 from a year earlier, the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry said.

It was the 33rd straight annual decline and the lowest level since records began in 1950, according to the ministry.

Children accounted for 12.8 percent of the population, the ministry said. In contrast, the ratio of people aged 65 or older was at a record high of 25.6 percent.

Of major countries with a population of at least 40 million, Japan had the lowest ratio of children to the total population -- compared with 19.5 percent for the United States and 16.4 percent for China, Jiji Press said.

Last month, the government said the number of people in the world's third largest economy dropped by 0.17 percent to 127,298,000 as of October 1, 2013. This figure includes long-staying foreigners.

The proportion of people aged 65 or over is forecast to reach nearly 40 percent of Japan's population in 2060, the government has warned.

É uma novidade. O pacote de ajuda à Ucrânia será efetuado utilizando os SDR:

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) today approved a two-year Stand-By Arrangement (SBA) for Ukraine. The arrangement amounts to SDR 10.976 billion (about US$17.01 billion, 800 percent of quota) and was approved under the Fund's exceptional access policy. The authorities’ economic program supported by the Fund aims to restore macroeconomic stability, strengthen economic governance and transparency, and launch sound and sustainable economic growth, while protecting the most vulnerable.

The approval of the SBA enables the immediate disbursement of SDR 2.058 billion (about US$3.19 billion), with SDR 1.29 billion (about US$2 billion) being allocated to budget support. The second and third disbursements will be based on bi-monthly reviews and performance criteria, and the remainder of the program period will be subject to standard quarterly reviews and performance criteria.

German utility RWE said it agreed to supply Ukraine with natural gas this year, as the troubled country seeks to reduce its reliance on gas imported from Russia.

RWE is the first European energy company to agree to supply gas to Ukraine since the political crisis there threatened the former Soviet republic's supplies from Russia. But the deal underscores the extent to which Europe, now scrambling to shore up Ukraine, also depends on Russian gas.

The German company says it sources around one-third of its gas from Russia—meaning that at least some of what it ships to Ukraine may originate from there—while its other supplies come from Norway and other parts of Western Europe. RWE declined to estimate how much of its gas deliveries to Ukraine's state-owned energy company Naftogaz will likely stem from Russia or to provide details to the agreement, such as volumes, price or the duration of the shipments.

Contestação no Brasil: Platini pede interrupção



Uma é a imagem que o Brasil quer transmitir antes do Mundial de Futebol: meninos sorridentes e bem equipados, a celebrarem com sorrisos a inauguração do C de São Paulo, que os operários tentam terminar o mais depressa possível; e outra é a imagem que o mundo tem do Brasil: manifestações, pobreza, violência. Há um clima de alta tensão entre a população desesperada por causa do custo de vida e os custos do Mundial, e a polícia que tenta conter os ânimos num só mês (cinco semanas), antes de chegarem mais turistas, adeptos, equipas e comitivas.
Milhares de agentes foram convocados mas a repressão causa um ciclo vicioso de mais protestos, mais confrontos mais destruição. Neste momento, só 52% dos brasileiros estão contentes por acolher um dos eventos mais esperados dos últimos anos; eram 79% no início do ano. O presidente da UEFA, Michel Platini, pensa que os manifestantes devem fazer um intervalo, como se a fome fosse um jogo de futebol: “É preciso convencer os brasileiros que têm o Mundial de Futebol e estão lá para mostrar as belezas do país, a paixão pelo futebol e devem esperar um mês antes de exigirem resoluções sociais, será bom para o Brasil e para o planeta futebol”.
Mas os protestos não começaram ontem…há um ano que os espíritos se exaltam com a diminuição da qualidade de vida. O anúncio do custo da organização do Mundial de Futebol incendiou os ânimos: 11 mil milhões de euros num país onde o salário médio é de 639 euros e o mínimo 236.
Para satisfazer as necessidades de uma família são precisos 1000 euros. Os preços sobem em flecha. A inflação disparou 3,6 por cento em 2007 e 6,5% em 2013.
Um Iphone no Brasil (país que o produz) custa 893 euros, muito mais do que nos Estados Unidos ou na China. Os automóveis e os eletrodomésticos custam o dobro do preço que têm nos países industrializados. Os produtos essenciais, como o arroz, legumes, frangos, estão cada vez mais caros, mas as rendas de casa aumentaram 118%.
O Brasil é um país de paradoxos: sétima potência mundial, onde 6% da população vive em favelas, sem infraestuturas básicas, onde os traficantes são reis e a polícia entra em grupos fortemente armados a construção de estádios e hoteis não é de todo do interesse da população que exige cuidados de saúde, educação e transportes.

O Partido da Independência do Reino Unido, o UKIP, está a ganhar terreno. As sondagens indicam que estes defensores da saída britânica da União Europeia podem, inclusive, ganhar as eleições europeias no final deste mês.

O correspondente da Euronews, James Franey, encontrou-se com o líder do UKIP, Nigel Farage, em plena campanha, num “pub” de Knutsford, no noroeste da Inglaterra. Queríamos aprofundar a forte posição de Farage face à imigração assim como esclarecer os polémicos cartazes da campanha eleitoral. Queríamos saber também porque se pediu uma segunda pensão europeia quando ele próprio defende a abolição das despesas da União Europeia.

Última pergunta: Defende cortes na despesa da União Europeia. Porque é que tem esta segunda pensão voluntária através do Parlamento Europeu? Porque a pediu se está tão interessado em cortar na despesa europeia?

Não, nada disso. Há muitos deputados europeus que declinaram essa segunda pensão porque a consideram imoral. No seu caso, porque a pediu?

Porque pediu, então, essa pensão, se está em desacordo com o excesso de despesa europeia?
Porque vim para a política à custa de um grande prejuízo financeiro pessoal e, como já referi, quando morrer a minha família deve beneficiar disto.

É então para o seu filho poder comprar um bom apartamento em Londres? É essa a ideia de uma pensão europeia?
Não vai dar para pagar isso.

O UKIP é o PCP lá do RU. Não se paga nada mas se é para receber não há nenhuma objeção.
