Vibrations on the Sun may 'shake' the Earth Solar flares erupt on the Sun as seen by the Hinode spacecraft. Flares are known to have effects on Earth, but a controversial idea says that subtle solar vibrations with very low frequencies can also affect our planet (Image: Hinode/JAXA) What do dropped mobile phone calls, mysterious signals in undersea communications cables, and tiny tremors on the Earth have in common? They are all caused by vibrations on the Sun, according to one team of scientists. As for shaking the Earth, Thomson ventures that magnetic materials within the planet, such as nickel, could respond to the solar wind fluctuations. "It's a really odd kind of phenomenon," he told New Scientist. "It's not a very violent shaking, but it is measurable."
Sun's Mysterious Waves Found; May Be Solar Wind Source Powerful magnetic waves in the sun's atmosphere may be the energy source that drives the solar wind, a suite of new studies from a Japanese-led mission reports. These so-called Alfvén waves were first predicted by Swedish physicist Hannes Alfvén, who won the 1970 Nobel Prize in Physics for his theory. Hinode, which means "sunrise" in English, is a joint mission of the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), NASA, the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC), and the European Space Agency (ESA). The orbiter's instruments allowed researchers to take rapid-fire pictures of various solar structures (see a March 21, 2007. "These observations are unprecedented," said Jonathan Cirtain, a solar astrophysicist at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. "It's just like [the features] are waving at you."
Quem tiver óculos 3D pode disfrutar esta imagem: SUNSPOT ALERT: The sun is near the lowest ebb of the 11-year solar cycle and, until now, 2007 has been a year of very few sunspots. Enter sunspot 978: It popped over the sun's eastern limb yesterday and is quickly becoming a behemoth. The rapidly growing sunspot group is more than five times wider than Earth, making it an easy target for properly-filtered backyard telescopes. So far sunspot 978 poses little threat for strong solar flares, but this could change if the active region's development continues apace. http://spaceweather.com

Space Weather Alerts and Warnings Timeline que "arranque" do campo geomagnético é aquele? Terá alguma coisa a ver com isto? http://137.229.36.30 The chart below is a plot of the readings taken using the New HAARP VHF Riometer. This instrument is a sensitive receiver tuned to a frequency of 30 MHz. The antenna is an array of 4 element "yagi" type elements pointed directly upward to listen to the background or galactic noise. This noise varies from one hour to the next as the Earth rotates and, in the absence of ionospheric absorption, is a constant, repeatable function of Local Siderial Time. Over many observations, it is possible to develop a "quiet day" curve which represents the greatest noise that would be heard for any given hour of the day. By comparing the current noise measurement with the quiet day level, the current 30 MHz ionospheric absorption level can be derived and this number is shown in the figure. Solar-terrestrial events, such as geomagnetic storms are usually indicated by increases in the absorption level. The absorption at lower frequencies in the HF band is usually much higher than the level observed at 30 MHz. Occasional spikes in the received signal that go above the quiet day curve are caused by interference from broadcast signals in the 30 MHz band. Click here for a larger plot without this text.
NASA Spacecraft Make New Discoveries about Northern Lights Dec. 11, 2007: NASA's fleet of THEMIS spacecraft, launched less than 8 months ago, has made three important discoveries about spectacular eruptions of Northern Lights called "substorms" and the source of their power. The discoveries include giant magnetic ropes that connect Earth's upper atmosphere to the Sun and explosions in the outskirts of Earth's magnetic field. A "magnetic rope" is a twisted bundle of magnetic fields organized much like the twisted hemp of a mariner's rope. Spacecraft have detected hints of these ropes before, but a single spacecraft is insufficient to map their 3D structure. THEMIS's five satellites were able to perform the feat.
Talvez sim.
