May 5 (Reuters) - The United States is set to remove sanctions against Eritrea, according to an internal U.S. government document seen by Reuters, a decision analysts linked to the African state's strategic location on the Red Sea shipping route.

The U.S. move is aimed at improving ties with Eritrea, which has a long Red ‌Sea coastline opposite Saudi Arabia, while also sending a message to neighbouring Ethiopia not to go to war with its longtime Horn of Africa foe, analysts said.

The U.S. administration under President Joe Biden imposed sanctions in 2021 against Eritrea's ruling party and military as well as senior Eritrean officials for their role in a war in neighbouring Ethiopia, where Eritrean forces backed Ethiopian troops fighting regional authorities in the northern Tigray region.

The internal government document, a note sent by the U.S. State Department to several countries, said the U.S. would rescind "on or around May 4" an executive order, opens new tab signed by Biden imposing the sanctions. Ties had been on ice for decades even before the sanctions were imposed.

It was not clear when the lifting of the sanctions would be announced. Neither the U.S. State Department nor the Treasury immediately responded to requests for comment.

Posto isto, temos quase 200 pessoas, algumas doentes, num navio que ninguém quer receber porque há um surto a bordo. Isto cheira muito a 1600's e estamos em 2026. Resquícios pandémicos na sociedade europeia. As pessoas não pensarão "corro o risco de ficar doente por causa disto?" mas sim "corro o risco de passar o verão enfiado dentro de casa por causa disto"?

Sanchez diz que Espanha tem a obrigação moral de receber o navio. Concordo. Mas são +2 ou dias de viagem até Espanha Continental onde certamente a capacidade instalada total dos serviços de saúde a todos os niveis (incluindo testagem) será mais avançada do que nas ilhas. Fica a questão a Sanchez, essa moralidade não pode ser usada para tomar uma decisão que tecnicamente faça mais sentido?

Circumcision is one of the oldest elective surgical procedures. It may go back to prehistory, and certainly predates the emergence of Judaism, the religion with which it is most associated today. In fact it seems the Jews picked up the custom from their neighbors, the Egyptians.

The earliest documentation of the practice dates to a time not long after the invention of writing, and comes from the land of the Pharaohs, dating back to the Old Kingdom (2686-2181 B.C.E.).

Performing male circumcision for non-medical reasons is not prohibited in Belgium, but it must be carried out with the involvement of a doctor.

The investigation was launched following, among other things, a complaint from members of the Jewish community, and last year a number of searches were carried out in the Jewish neighbourhood of Antwerp. At the time, investigators seized items including knives and requested lists of children who had recently been circumcised.

Judges still have to decide whether the case will actually go to trial. That will take place on 18 June. In the meantime, the parties involved will be given access to the case file.
