US Plains ice storm leaves 270,000 without power

NEW YORK, Dec 10 (Reuters) - An ice storm knocked out power to more than 270,000 customers in the Central Plains and Midwest on Sunday and Monday, local power companies reported Monday morning.

The system entered Oklahoma early Sunday, bringing freezing rain that caused significant ice accumulation on trees and overhead power lines. The weight of the ice downed tree branches and power lines, cutting power.
That system has now moved into Kansas, Missouri and Illinois.

In Kansas and Missouri, a spokeswoman for Empire District Electric Co (EDE.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the hardest-hit power company in Kansas, said Monday morning the utility had more than 58,000 customers without power and the numbers were still growing as the storm continues to batter its territory.

The Empire District Electric spokeswoman said the company had urged its customers to prepare for the possibility of several days without power since the utility could not at this time estimate when it could start restoring service.

Uma amiga que está no estado do Texas enviou-me estas fotografias (telemóvel) do bairro onde vive e o panorama é este. Parece uma zona de guerra:

("So Theresa asked me to post and give an update because things are very bad and to ask people to pray and for the rest of the country to be on alert because this storm is stretching across large portions of the country.
Also, something major may be coming down and it may be related to what Socrete said. Theresa says she is glad she heeded his advice to prepare to stay warm and had all the extra blankets etc handy because she is sitting there with no electric and no heat and no ability to leave the house because of all the trees that are falling every second there.
These trees are hundreds of years old and huge and limbs and trees are everywhere, it is sad.
The pictures that my daughter sent were weird, because the ground was still warm enough to keep the streets clear, although ice laden tree branches were taking out power lines and transformers all over town. Last report had 100,000 people in Tulsa alone without power.

With more weather on the way and falling temperatures, it could get really bad. Here is a picture, this morning, of the tree in my daughter's front yard. It had already lost a lot of the bigger branches and she had to have them dragged out of her driveway just to get the car out of the garage. Note the splitting branch in the center of the pic... another one getting ready to go. ")

Houve um velho que me contou uma historia aqui a alguns anos, e que me disse assim vai carregando lenha para um destes invernos nao morreres gelado pois a EDP n salva vidas ahaha

Ice storm
An ice storm is a type of winter storm characterized by freezing rain.

When rain falls onto freezing-cold ground, conditions can become dangerous.

The cold rain freezes as it touches the ground and other surfaces. This freezing rain covers everything with heavy, smooth ice. The ice-covered roads become slippery and dangerous. Driving becomes extremely hazardous as the ice causes most vehicles to skid out of control, which can cause devastating car crashes as well as pile ups. Even pedestrians are severely affected as sidewalks become slippery, which can cause people to slip and fall and outside stairs can become an extreme injury hazard.

In addition to hazardous driving/walking conditions, branches or even whole trees may break from the weight of ice. Falling branches can block roads, tear down power and telephone lines and cause other damage. Even without overhead tree branches, the weight of the ice itself can snap power lines, and power poles as well (even the big steel frame electrical pylons have crumbled under the weight of ice before). This can leave people without power for as long as several days to even weeks. According to most meteorologists, just one quarter of an inch of ice accumulation can add about 500 pounds of weight per line span. Damage from ice storms is highly capable of shutting down entire metropolitan areas.

The North American ice storm of 1998 (also known as Ice storm of 1998 and Ice Storm '98) was a massive ice storm that struck a relatively narrow swath of land from Eastern Ontario to southern Quebec to Nova Scotia in Canada, and bordering areas from Northern New York to Southeast Maine in the United States, in January 1998. It caused massive damage to trees and electrical infrastructure all over the area, leading to widespread long term power outages. Millions were left in the dark for periods varying from days to weeks, leading to more than 30 fatalities, a shut down of activities in large cities like Montreal and Ottawa and an unprecedented effort in reconstruction of the power grid.

Vou-te dar um exemplo prático:
Sais de casa para ires trabalhar, abres a porta da rua descontraidamente, e zás, vais parar ao chão e descobres tens umas fracturas expostas. Pegas no telemóvel, chamas a ambulância e respondem-te do 112 que para além das ambulâncias não terem correntes de neve não se pode circular nas estradas.
Onde é que está a piada duma tempestade de gelo?

Este é um dos episódios quotidianos que pode ocorrer.

O pior nestas tempestades é mesmo o colpaso das redes de distribuição de energia. Uma vez vi um documentário na TVCabo sobre a Tempestade de Gelo de 1998 e fiquei esclarecido sobre a forma como a sociedade moderna, mesmo em países ricos, pode colapsar durante semanas perante um fenónomo extremo destes.

Exacto. Sem esquecer os problemas de abastecimento de energia eléctrica, meios para nos aquecermos (lenha ou aquecedores a gás/gasóleo) e despensa cheia (água para beber, conservas, etc). Porque ficamos realmente isolados.
Não é algo que desejemos ter por muito tempo perto de nós. Apesar de ser um espectáculo invulgar, pode ser vital.
