Severe weather brings risk of coastal flooding
7 March 2008
Met Office weather experts are forecasting a spell of severe weather on Monday, bringing the risk of disruption to transport and power supply networks.
Forecasters at the UK's national weather service have issued severe weather warnings for much of the UK, with severe gales and potentially damaging gusts likely across southern and western parts of the British Isles.
Winds are expected to strengthen on Monday with gusts of 60 to 70 m.p.h., but perhaps 80 m.p.h. gusts over exposed coasts and hills.
Brian Golding, Head of Forecasting at the Met Office said: "The arrival of this exceptionally deep area of low pressure is expected to coincide with Spring tides on Monday bringing the risk of flooding to western coasts stretching from southern England to northern Scotland".
The Met Office and Environment Agency in England and Wales and SEPA in Scotland will be monitoring the forecast throughout the weekend. People are advised to stay in touch with the latest weather forecast and warnings on the Met Office website, and tune into local radio and TV. Those concerned by the risk of coastal flooding should call Floodline on 0845 988 1188 for the latest flood warnings in their area.
