A PASSENGER plane has crashed into the sea shortly after take-off from Jakarta, Indonesia.
The Lion Air flight between Jakarta and Pangkal Pinang lost contact with air traffic control early Monday morning, search and rescue officials in the country have said.

Yusuf Latif, a spokesman for Indonesia's search and rescue agency said: "It has been confirmed that it has crashed."
The plane lost contact 13 minutes after takeoff, according to the official.
The aircraft is said to be a Boeing-737 Max 8, which can hold up to 210 passengers.
Lion Air says confirmed it lost contact with the passenger jet flying to the island off Sumatra.
