Martin Indyk, a senior State Department official in the Clinton Administration who also served as Ambassador to Israel, said that “the Middle East is heading into a serious Sunni-Shiite Cold War.” Indyk, who is the director of the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution, added that, in his opinion, it was not clear whether the White House was fully aware of the strategic implications of its new policy. “The White House is not just doubling the bet in Iraq,” he said. “It’s doubling the bet across the region. Moscow has said “no” to Saudi Arabia’s alleged proposal of a rich arms deal and protection of Russia’s gas interests in the Middle East in exchange for abandoning Syrian President Bashar Assad, according to Arab and European diplomats.

The proposal of $15 billion in weapons contracts was allegedly made during the July 31 meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and influential intelligence chief Prince Bandar bin Sultan, Reuters reported.

Neither Moscow nor Riyadh has officially commented on the agenda of the talks, but a Thursday AFP report revealed new details of the negotiations.

According to an undisclosed European diplomat, Prince Bandar proposed the deal and told Putin that "whatever regime comes after" Assad will be "completely" in Riyadh’s hands. The Prince reportedly stated that if the deal was accepted, Saudi Arabia would not sign any contracts damaging Russian interests by allowing Gulf countries to transport its gas across Syria to Europe.

The terms included Moscow dropping its support of President Bashar Assad, as well as not opposing any future Security Council resolutions on Syria.

O primeiro-ministro da Ucrânia, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, classificou hoje como "antiucraniano e antieuropeu" um acordo entre a Gazprom russa e várias empresas europeias para a construção de um segundo gasoduto sob o Mar Báltico.

Em junho, a Gazprom chegou a acordo com a anglo-holandesa Shell, a alemã E.ON e a austríaca OMV para a construção de um gasoduto, designado Nord Stream-2, para a Alemanha, evitando a passagem pela Ucrânia e também pela Polónia.

"Quando o primeiro Nord Stream foi construído, não trouxe à União Europeia (UE) uma acrescida independência energética", declarou Yatsenyuk, depois de manter conversações com o seu homólogo eslovaco, Robert Fico, em Bratislava.

The prime ministers of Ukraine and Slovakia have condemned a recent deal to expand the current Nord Stream pipeline that delivers natural gas directly from Russia to Western Europe.

Following the two leaders’ meeting in Bratislava on September 10, Slovakia’s Robert Fico said the deal was a betrayal, while his Ukrainian counterpart, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, called the plan "an anti-European and anti-Ukrainian project."

Yatsenyuk said his country would lose $2 billion and Slovakia $800 million in transit fees if the project, known as Nord Stream-2, is implemented.

Last week, Russian giant Gazprom and energy companies from Western EU countries signed a shareholders' agreement on the plan to expand the pipeline that runs beneath the Baltic Sea to Germany.

The project has also been criticized by Poland.

Só quem não conhece os ingleses pode dizer uma coisa destas, até parece que ninguém aprendeu nada com as últimas eleições. Com este partido trabalhista na Inglaterra, as eleições serão um passeio para os conservadores. A Inglaterra não é a Grécia.
