rot-rot-grune...

Germany announced Tuesday (10 November) it is again applying Dublin rules on asylum for Syrian refugees.

The move is a U-turn on a migration policy followed since August as well as a new indicator of tension in chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition.

The impact of the latest U-turn is unclear for now, as the interior ministry did not specify whether it would start sending back migrants to Austria, Hungary, or Croatia.

It said it would take decisions on a case-by-case basis, and evaluate whether sending migrants back to other EU countries is a "realistic possibility".

But on Sunday, the influential finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, expressed his support for de Maiziere and said Germany should end its "open door" policy.

"We need to send a clear message to the world: We are very much prepared to help. We've shown that we are. But our possibilities are also limited," he said in an interview with ARD television.

A poll published by Bild newspaper Tuesday showed a new fall in popularity for the CDU, while the anti-euro and anti-immigration AfD party reached 10 percent of voting intention for the first time.

Finland’s ministry of interior on Tuesday said space for housing asylum seekers is running out, reports Finnish public media YLE. Around 28,000 people applied for asylum in Finland this year. Authorities says they may have to revert to tents and containers if the housing limit is breached.

In a poll conducted by Wilke for Jyllands-Posten, 11.3 percent of Danish Muslims said that the Quran should serve as the sole basis for Denmark’s laws, while an additional 26.5 percent said that the nation’s laws should be built upon a mixture of the Quran’s teachings and the Danish constitution.

Just over half, 53.9 percent, said that Denmark’s laws should be solely based on its constitution.

The poll results come just a week after another survey found that 77.2 percent of Danish Muslims agreed that “the Quran’s instructions should be followed completely”, a marked increase from 2006 when just 62.4 percent agreed.

Radwan Mansour, an Aarhus-based imam, said that he thinks Denmark should be ruled by a mixture of the constitution and the Quran, which he argues are not in conflict.

“If this was an Islamic country, it should be the Quran. But Denmark is not an Islamic country – we don’t decide – so I think it should be both the Quran and the constitution. When it comes to justice, the sharing of resources and so on, there is a fine accordance [between the two, ed.],” he told Jyllands-Posten.

Hoping to combat the disproportionate number of rapes committed by immigrants and their descendants, a number of political parties are pushing for sexual education to be included in the Danish language courses provided to foreigners, Metroxpress reported.

Between 2013 and 2014, 34.5 percent of all individuals convicted of rape were immigrants or their descendants despite those groups only accounting for roughly 12 percent of Denmark’s total population.

“We had some problems in Stavanger because some of the refugees had sexually violent episodes with Norwegian girls in the centre of the town,” she said. “So the police, the immigration department and Hero Norge launched a project to teach refugees about Norwegian behaviour.”

Hagen explained that men from sexually conservative countries often struggled to understand how to interpret the behaviour of young Scandinavian women.

Two weeks ago, Klaus Bouillon, a politician from Germany’s reigning political party appeared on national television to discuss a recent visit to an asylum center. What he had seen clearly worried him.

Some migrants were insulting female volunteers simply for being women, some were refusing to eat meals because the women serving those meals were viewed as ‘unclean,’ and others were fighting to get to the front of the serving line when it wasn’t their turn.

When the moderator asked Bouillon why he decided to make these concerns public, Bouillon emphasized the importance of being truthful with Germans, saying, “we cannot tell the people that integration will be easy when it won’t be”.
