Turkey to have a ‘permanent base’ in Iraq

Turkey will have a permanent military base in the northern Iraqi region of Bashiqa near the city of Mosul as its military group training local forces in Iraq has been reinforced with additional personnel, Turkey's Hurriyet reports.

According to Hurriyet, the deal concerning the establishment of the base was signed on November 4 between Iraqi Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani and then Turkish Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioglu during the latter’s visit to northern Iraq.

Turkey’s deployment in Iraq violates international law – Iraqi president

Dispatching several hundred Turkish troops in Iraq near the city of Mosul without the consent of Iraqi authorities is “a violation of international norms and law," the country’s president, Fouad Massoum, said in a statement, as reported by Reuters.

The Iraq’s leader called for immediate withdrawal of the Turkish troops and asked Iraqi foreign ministry to take necessary steps “to preserve the country’s sovereignty and independence.”

Earlier, Iraqi government has also demanded that Ankara withdraw its forces from the country’s territory and Iraq’s foreign ministry has called Turkey’s actions “a serious breach of Iraqi sovereignty.”

US quits asking more Turkish effort in fighting ISIS – Reuters

Washington has lifted its longstanding request for Ankara to step up action against terrorist group Islamic State after the downing of Russian bomber by a Turkish fighter jet, Reuters cited a US official as saying. Turkey has not flown any missions in Syria against IS since November 24, when the incident happened. Earlier, US Secretary of Defense Ash Carter told the US Congress that most Turkish cross-border bombings targeted Kurdish fighters rather than jihadists.

Não é extremamente curioso que a Turquia, que não tem lá muito interesse em combater o EI, estabeleça uma base militar perto de Mosul, cidade conhecida pelos seus poços de petróleo e por ser um reduto do EI?

Bom, há que formar novas rotas para o contrabando de petróleo. Os russos estão a fazer muito dano. O que será da adiada intervenção militar iraquiana para expulsar o EI de Mosul?

Guerra urbana é sempre muito feia:

An Iraqi and Kurdish military force of 20,000 – 25,000 troops is being prepared to recapture the city of Mosul from Islamic State fighters this spring. The city was captured by militants last June, and is the largest city in the self-declared caliphate.

US Central Command said on Thursday that at the time of this assault, planned for April or May, it will support these troops with airstrikes on enemy positions near Mosul. The city, which has a population of over 1 million, is currently being held by an estimated 1,000 – 2,000 fighters belonging to the Islamic State (IS, also known as ISIS or ISIL).

Como não há forma de se saber logo quem é civil e quem não é, uma intervenção destas vai causar muita morte e destruição. E se houverem xiitas a disparar isso não vai cair bem numa cidade maioritariamente sunita.

Quando a extrema direita e a extrema esquerda, todos eles com ideias totalitárias e com discursos agressivos e apontando o dedo ( com uma suposta superioridade moral) a franjas da sociedade, e mesmo assim têm o apoio de algumas classes sociais mais esclarecidas, algo vai muito mal na velha Europa.

Os europeus quererão, porventura, regressar aos anos 30,40, 50? Comunistas de um lado,fascistas do outro? Que destruiu quase por completo a Europa e o fim da sua hegemonia no mundo?
